Eileen Gray (1878-1976) was an Irish furniture maker. Most notably, Gray was one of the first women to be admitted to the Slade, where she specialized in painting before apprenticing at a London lacquer workshop. She quickly established herself as a leading modernist designer for her inclusion of chrome, steel tube, and glass, around the same time as Mies Van der Rohe and well before Le Corbusier. Her architectural projects are of particular significance, as her two homes in the Alpes Maritimes were considered to be among the purest examples of domestic architecture and interior design. The Royal Society of Arts as a Royal Designer for Industry appointed her in 1972.
